How a New Notification Centre Transformed our User Experience
Product Design

Introduction

In the fast-paced landscape of SaaS development, every feature holds the potential to dramatically enhance or hinder the user experience. One such feature often underestimated but incredibly potent, is the notification centre. For years, the concept lingered on our ‘wish list’, always overshadowed by seemingly more urgent features. It took a client’s high-priority request for an approval system to spotlight the critical role a notification centre could play.
Integrating a notification centre into the approval process wasn’t part of the original functional spec—it was a recommendation I made as its product designer after extensive research. The inclusion was transformative. Instead of clumsy email chains prone to delays and disorganisation, the notification centre centralises all approval-related communications right within the product. Users can see new notifications upon login and directly navigate to critical tasks, making the process more efficient and user-friendly. This addition proved invaluable, not just in facilitating quicker responses but also in driving the adoption of the new, intricately designed approval process.

How Our Notification Centre Became a Communication Hub

When we first integrated the notification centre into our platform, it was primarily designed to serve as an essential tool for our approval process. Its utility, however, quickly surpassed its original function. What started as a messaging conduit for approvals has blossomed into a robust platform for multiple forms of internal communication—each having a direct impact on user engagement and customer satisfaction.
Firstly, the notification centre has become a vital channel for announcing feature releases. No longer reliant solely on emails or external blogs, we can now inform our users about new features right within the product. This in-context notification increases the likelihood that users will explore and adopt new functionalities, thereby amplifying product engagement.
Secondly, important product news and updates now find their way directly to our users through the notification centre. Whether it’s a critical system update or a seasonal promotion, the message is delivered where it’s most effective—within the user’s workflow.
Lastly, the addition of the notification centre has opened up new avenues for our marketing team. The ability to share targeted messages and content within the product means that our marketing communications are more integrated and less intrusive, yet just as effective. This has given us an additional channel to nurture customer relationships and build brand loyalty.

Conclusion

By evolving into a versatile communication hub, our notification centre has become the nerve centre of our platform.
